the Centenary Celebrations
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
This season is a very special one in the history of the Edinburgh Curling Club. 100 years ago, on 5 February 1911, the Haymarket ice rink opened its doors for the very first time and in that same year the Edinburgh Curling Club was instituted. Since then, the club has run competitions for its members and provided a place for pre- and post-game chats about the rub of the stones and shots played. It was ever thus for curlers – that’s what makes our sport so special – and hopefully, the club will continue in that vein for a hundred years to come.
Your committee has been working hard to plan our celebration of 100 years of curling on indoor ice in Edinburgh. Thanks to Murrayfield Curling Limited’s generous donation of the rink to the club for the entire weekend of 28 and 29 January 2012, we will be running ten centenary bonspiels. I do hope that you are one of the lucky curlers able to take part in one of the bonspiels.
On 25 February, the Corn Exchange will provide a fitting venue for the club’s centenary dinner. The headline speaker is John O’Neil and both Harry Waugh and Gordon Addison will also contribute; the food will be of the finest and the wine will hopefully flow along with tall tales of derring-do and general curling chat. Again, I hope that you will be able to make the dinner – it promises to be an exciting highlight to the year’s celebrations.
Of course, curling will continue throughout the year. The club’s various competitions like the Swan, the James Young, the Cousin and the Edinburgh International will continue to draw competitors from a’ the airts and pairts. If you would like to enter a team in any of the competitions, have a look at the fixture list and curling competitions booklet or indeed dip further into this web site for more information. There is bound to be a competition or two that is just right for you.
The club rooms are always there for your own club’s socials and gatherings. Bill will continue to provide you with good fare and Aileen and her team behind the bar will always be on hand to provide you with a tonic or pick-me-up!
On the wider front, I know that Iain Baxter and his team have been busy over the summer months working behind the scenes making improvements to the ice rink and carrying out essential repairs and maintenance. Iain and Douglas Baxter are both attending the World Curling Federation Advanced Ice Curling Technician course over the summer in order to keep up to date with the latest thinking. I am sure that you will find the ice conditions to your liking as the season progresses.
Have a great season and I look forward to meeting you in the rink. Good curling!
